3 Reasons To Use Short Codes In Your Mobile Marketing

If you are here there is a good chance that you know what a short-code is and what it accomplishes.  However, if this is a new concept to you, let me explain it to you first and then we will move into the post.

Sometimes short codes are called CSC’s which stands for Common Short Codes.  Short codes are going to be 5 or 6 digits and shorter always than the regular 10 digit phone numbers. It’s the code you see on signs that says “Text LOVE To 45940”. Well, the “45940 is the SHORT CODE.

A long code is basically a phone number like 561-343-8494. Many so-called “text message companies” use these codes as a short cut through the short code process.

Here’s three reasons to use short codes in your mobile marketing

Reason One – Branding

These can be brandable and help establish trust with your  target audience.  Sending from a short-code and receiving from a short-code can be used to brand a company with some sort of keyword that describes their company.

These are similar to getting a Vanity license plate.  A really neat site I found that highlights a couple of the bigger names is here.

Reason Two – Speed of Delivery

When sending mass SMS messages from a standard phone number, there is a throttling effect that happens with the phone number, this is because these regular phone numbers were never intended to do this type of work.

So if you’re looking to send out 10’s of thousands of text messages, a long code is not the way to go.

Reason Three – Send & Receive

Imagine sending out a thousand or even ten-thousand text messages and receiving all of the reply’s back. There would be no way to respond to all of them. With a short code you can setup a series of autoresponders or auto-replys based on how people reply back with. For example, I can ask via a text message, “Would you like a $10 coupon to Best Buy Reply Yes or No.”

When a user replys “YES” my autoresponder will send a message back to the receipient with the coupon. This is hard to do, with a long code phone number.

With Call Loop we developed our own voice broadcast and text message autoresponders to allow you to create a multi-step marketing campaign using email from your current email platform like Aweber, iContact, MailChimp, or InfusionSoft and voice and text from us at Call Loop.
